Mars Cubesats Make History with Deep Space Maneuver

"The results are embargoed by the journal Science until then", NASA has written in the statement. NASA stated that Michelle Thaller - the assistant director of science for communications, Planetary Science Division (NASA) would host the discussion.

NASA's Curiosity Rover has apparently made an exciting discovery on Mars, but the space agency is remaining tight-lipped on the potential bombshell until Thursday, leaving plenty of time for speculation.

It is not a shocker that Curiosity has again found something interesting on Mars but the NASA's secrecy about it raised some questions.

The pair of CubeSats that make up the Mars Cube One (MarCO) mission were both launched on May 5, along with the InSight lander, which is headed toward a November 26 touchdown on the red planet.

NASA's announcement will stream live online and on the agency's terrestrial television platform NASA Television from 2pm EDT or 7pm United Kingdom time.

Curiosity was sent to the Red Planet in August 2012 to study its climate and geology as well as investigate whether the planet could sustain life or has liquid water.

Among the researchers invited to share the new Curiosity rover discovery with the public are two scientists from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and two representatives from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. After two years, the team made the rover use one of its robotic arms to drill into a hole. Meanwhile, the delivery of sample into the rover's chemistry lab is also slated to occur in a few days.

Curiosity drilled its last scheduled rock sample in October 2016.

Using a duplicate rover at JPL, engineers studied the problem and came up with an alternative drilling method called "feed extended drilling", which was used for the first time on May 20 of this year. "We're cautiously optimistic that MarCO-B can follow MarCO-A", said Joel Krajewski of JPL, MarCO's project manager, reports Phys.Org.

"The science team was convinced that the engineers could deliver-so Convinced we drove back into some website that we overlooked drilling ahead". Surprisingly, we had the opportunity after five years of the mission.

However, all the hints indicate towards a correlation between the restart of Curiosity Rover's drilling experiments and this "new science results".
