US President Donald Trump said the recent G7 spat-dominated meeting in Canada was "good", but in the same breath warned the host country would pay for the comments of its prime minister.

The president's surrogates also piled on during Sunday U.S. news shows, with Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro saying there was "a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

"I find it hard to try to apologize for words that come from the mouths of people in our government, so I don't even try", she said.

Navarro later apologized for the comments, telling a news conference in Washington on Tuesday: "My job is to send a signal of strength".

"That's unconscionable", Heyman said."Anybody who represents the United States of America from the White House using that kind of language with any world leader of any type, I think is uncalled for".

The insults were supposedly a response to the post-G7 news conference in which Trudeau repeated his diplomatic criticism of Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs and said he would stand up for Canadians. Kudlow told Tapper that Trudeau "did a great disservice" to the G7, and said that Trudeau had attacked Trump for "domestic consumption".

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", Navarro said.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump said in Singapore. "And he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States".

Trump says Trudeau "probably didn't know that Air Force 1 has about 20 televisions". Trudeau's comments centered around Trump's lack of understanding when it comes to global trade.

The United States has already imposed a 25% steel tariff on imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union.

"From day one, we have said that we expected moments of drama and that we would keep calm and carry on throughout those moments", Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday in Ottawa.

Trump didn't help matters by attacking pretty much everyone at the summit. "It was very friendly", Trump said.

They were also thankful for the trade we do with the USA, our military aid, the underground railroad, the refugee program, our inclusivity and, of course, hockey and Tim Hortons. "I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said of the likelihood of Canada imposing retaliatory tariffs on the US.

Since then, several Trump aides have publicly criticized Trudeau. Mulroney, who negotiated the original Canada-US free trade agreement and the original NAFTA, has been serving as a trade advisor to the current PM. iPolitics' Charlie Pinkerton caught up with him.
