Against the backdrop of Mount Paektu, a dormant volcano symbolising Korean nationhood, she said Kim had met Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore's prime minister, and would hold talks with President Donald Trump.

But it was only Monday morning in North Korea that the government news agency reported that Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

Choi's fiery outburst at Trump's national security advisor John Bolton and Vice President Mike Pence had a fortnight ago been blamed for Trump suddenly, and briefly, cancelling the summit.

Sung Kim, a former United States ambassador to South Korea who has been leading the USA in talks with North Korean Vice-Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui since last month, is said to be continuing the discussions with his counterpart in Singapore.

"We have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump tweeted from Air Force One en route to Singapore, predicting that counterpart Kim Jong Un "will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before".

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore".

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of their Tuesday meeting.

The North Korea state run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said Tuesday's meeting would discuss "wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-US relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula".

The comment can be dismissed as casual optimism characteristic of the U.S. leader, but the watchers interpreted it as suggesting that the atmosphere in their last-minute negotiations on denuclearization may not be discouraging.

Trump and Kim touched down on a sweltering early summer day in Singapore, the city-state founded in the early 19th Century as a British colony because of its position at the intersection of sea lanes between Europe and Asia.

If the North Korean leader does indeed agree to completely abandon his country's nuclear weapons programme, Trump is expected to ease sanctions on the hermit kingdom and pave the way for much-needed foreign direct investment in the country.

"He has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again".

Trump had called Kim "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea as it conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of global warnings.

Among those representing the U.S. at the lunch were Secretary of Secretary Mike Pompeo, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser John Bolton.

"Trump is a publicity seeker".

Asked about the likely departure times of both leaders, a Singaporean source involved in planning the summit would only say that the host city had factored in the "fluidity of the situation" and was prepared for last-minute changes in the schedule of both leaders. He has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korea War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty. Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

Trump was pictured with the cake, delivered three days before his actual birthday. The Korean War of the early 1950s ended with a ceasefire, not a treaty.
