Italy's Osteria Francescana Crowned World's Best Restaurant Again

'I would love to see very soon that we don't need gender-specific awards because women will have recognition and there will be a balance in the industry.

It was the second time in three years the restaurant, which serves up modern Italian fare in Modena, in Italy's northern gastronomic heartland, has headed the list, entries on which are now as coveted as Michelin stars.

His father wanted him to become a lawyer but when he was 23-years-old Bottura, who was famous for rustling up culinary delights for his friends, dropped his law studies to open a Trattoria in Campazzo, in the countryside around Modena in the Po River Valley.

El Celler de Can Roca, serving traditional Catalonian food by chefs and brothers Joan, Josep, and Jordi Roca in Girona, Spain, was the runner up.

Spain leads the way with seven restaurants on the list, including three in the top 10 - El Celler de Can Roca (No 2); Mugaritz (No 9) and Asador Etxebarri (No 10).

Tempting tapas, steaming paella, deliciously salty cured meats and irresistibly fresh seafood; we already knew that Spain was an absolute haven for foodies, but the results of this year's list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants has just confirmed it. Smyth went on to emphasize the importance of cultivating better kitchen cultures so chefs of all backgrounds can thrive and rise to top positions. This award is given to the chef with the most votes from his or her peers. Peru's Gaston Acurio won the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award.

The top 10 included two Peruvian restaurants, "Central" which slipped to number six from fifth place previous year, and "Maido" which climbed to number seven from eighth place. The event has been held before in London, New York and Melbourne.
