Pompeo Says U.S. Objective For North Korea Summit Hasn't Changed

Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un prepare for Singapore summit

Singapore is one of the few countries that have diplomatic relations with both the USA and North Korea.

In a statement, US State Secretary Mike Pompeo said "The president is well-prepared for tomorrow's engagement with Chairman Kim".

The outcomes of Tuesday's unprecedented meeting are highly uncertain, but analysts say that the mere fact is happenng is a step forward.

He would not be drawn on what might be on offer. Kim has led the US team at the demilitarized zone working on a joint communique with North Korea.

Their first meeting will be just the two men, with their translators, without any advisers present.

Before leaving for the ill-fated G7 Summit, Trump had underlined his resolve vis-à-vis a productive meeting with Kim by stating that the summit would be "much more than a photo-op".

The city-state's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, tweeted a picture of himself shaking hands with Kim at Changi Airport, and the North Korean leader was driven into the center in a stretch limousine, accompanied by a convoy of more than 20 vehicles.

North Korea is estimated to have up to 120,000 political prisoners in its sprawling gulag system. "They're the lead agency", Perry told CNN. "I'm unconcerned about our capacity to continue to do what we need to do".

Close US ally Japan has urged Trump to bring up the decades-old issue of its citizens abducted in 1970s and 1980s to train Pyongyang's spies in Japanese language and customs.

But the state is now trying to sell the idea of talking to what it once described as "the incarnation of all sorts of evil, the empire of devils".

It's the "changed era" that is important. Kim, up until his recent high-profile summit with South Korea's president on the southern side of their shared border, has usually hunkered down behind his vast propaganda and security services, or made short trips to autocrat-friendly China.

The survival of the Kim family dynasty has been the driving force of North Korea's quest for nuclear power, a quest that began with Kim's grandfather Kim Il Sung. This has echoes of that. However, others reported that the Air China Boeing 747 took off before the leader's jet did by an hour or two as a security measure to avoid making his mode of transportation known.

Last year it carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland, sending tensions soaring to a level unseen in years as a newly-elected Trump traded threats of war and colorful personal insults with Kim, with Trump dubbed a "dotard" and Kim "Little Rocket Man". He also famously vowed to unleash "fire and fury" if Pyongyang kept threatening the US.

And previous year his half-brother Kim Jong Nam was brazenly assassinated in broad daylight, smeared with a deadly nerve agent as he walked through Kuala Lumpur's global airport in a hit which most analysts say could only have come from Pyongyang.

In March, Trump surprised the world by accepting an invitation from Kim to meet in person. "They both get what they want".

Denuclearisation has been the central issue in the run-up to the talks.

"We have had substantive and detailed meetings to date, including this morning with the North Koreans", he said.

But rather than burn Trump and the U.S. on a bad deal for short-term benefits, Kim may actually look to embrace the United States to balance against China.

"I think within the first minute, I'll know", Trump said, "just, my touch, my feel - That's what I do".
