Pope warns oil executives: Climate change may ‘destroy civilization’ | TheHill

Pope Francis met with oil and gas executives and investors in a closed-door session at the Vatican Saturday to sound the alarm on fossil fuels' dire threat to humanity and urgently called for greater efforts to develop alternative energy.

He stated this at the global conference "the Transfer of energy and care for our common home" held in the Vatican.

Climate change was a challenge of "epochal proportions", he said, adding that the world needed an energy mix that combated pollution, eliminated poverty and promoted social justice.

Reuters reports the unprecedented conference was held behind closed doors at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Pope Francis, who penned a 2015 encyclical on climate change, writing that it was both real and primarily human-caused, told the gathered executives, "Civilization requires energy, but energy use must not destroy civilization".

Francis said Saturday that while the oil and gas companies have made progress toward cleaner fuel and more climate-friendly business practices, there was still more work to do.

Pope Francis delivers a speech during a meeting with Youth Eucharistic Movement at the Vatican in August 2015.

According to Vatican News, the 40 participants at the conference, called "Energy Transition and Care for our Common Home", included senior executives of ExxonMobil, Eni, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Equinor and Pemex among others.

Last month, a group of investors representing more than $10.4 trillion in assets published a letter in The Financial Times urging the oil and gas industry to "be more transparent and take responsibility for its emissions", which account for 50 percent of global carbon emissions, according to the Carbon Disclosure Project, an organization based in London.

"Civilization requires energy but energy use must not destroy civilization", he told the executives.

The Pope has long supported climate action. The Pope acknowledged the latent demand for energy but said it must not come at the cost of the environment.

In a globalized world in search of new sources of energy, over one billion people do not have electricity.

Francis has been vocal on the issue of climate change before. The impacts of the climate change will have a disproportionate effect on the poor residing across the globe.

The pope on Saturday said that the situation was dire. He noted that the poor pay the highest price for climate change, often being forced to migrate due to water insecurity, severe weather and an accompanying collapse in agriculture.
