President says Trudeau's criticism will cost Canada 'a lot of money'

Destroying trust with 280 Twitter characters’ – France and Germany rally against Trump

In a rare apology by a Trump administration official, top White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Tuesday walked back his inflammatory statement that there was a "special place in hell" reserved for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"My job was to send a signal of strength", he said Tuesday at a Wall Street Journal CFO Network conference in Washington.

Unbowed, Trump tweeted anew Monday morning from Singapore, repeating his criticism of US trade policies with Canada - he also took aim at Germany - in a multitweet rant that went beyond 200 words all told. "Things will change. I think they are one of the great winners today", Trump said when asked about the more than 100,000 political prisoners in North Korea.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around, '" Trump fumed on Twitter.

A Trump adviser had suggested Sunday that Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before the meeting with Kim.

The president said he was annoyed by Trudeau's comments about not letting Canada get pushed around.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro drove the message home in an extraordinary assault on a close United States ally and neighbour.

Trudeau said in a press conference that Canada will "move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that Americans have unjustly applied to us".

Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, told reporters in Quebec on Sunday: "Canada does not believe that ad-hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries".

Trump says he watched that news conference on his way to Singapore, and was upset because he thought he and Trudeau had had a positive meeting in Charlevoix.

Mr. Trump's actions led to an extraordinary juxtaposition: an abrupt public feud and deterioration of ties between the US and Canada at the same moment as warm words and a detente between the USA and North Korea.

Trump's extraordinary outburst in recent days appeared aimed at striking a chord with voters who support his "America First" agenda. No, I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau.

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called USA steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

"He'll learn that's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada". And I say, 'Push him around?

Bruce Heyman, a former U.S. ambassador to Canada, said Mr Navarro had "crossed a line". You know they put out a document, I don't know if you saw it.
