No immediate member of the royal family has made an official visit to Israel since its establishment in 1948, nor to the Palestinian territories.

In a 1994 visit to Yad Vashem, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, planted a tree there in his mother's honor.

CNN reports that William is also expected to visit Jerusalem's Old City, the Mount of Olives and the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in the Garden of Gethsemane.

But it kind of explains the hard political tightrope on which the Duke of Cambridge - and his team - must walk over the next few days.

Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin - who is running for mayor of the city in this year's elections - called the reference a "distortion" that can not "change reality".

Israel defines Jerusalem as its "eternal and indivisible" capital, while the Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Israel seized the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Ambassador Quarrey insisted the wording merely reflected decades of terminology used by British governments.

Prince William will open his visit to Israel with a trip to Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust memorial museum, and he'll be accompanied by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.

"It is important to emphasis that the Duke is not a political figure, this is not a political visit", he said.

In 87F (31C) blazing sunshine, William went to Jerash to help showcase the 1st century Roman ruins, Jordan's second most popular tourist destination after the ancient city of Petra.

Prince William is now on a royal tour of the Middle East without his wife Kate Middleton, who's on maternity leave.
