Real Madrid confirm Julen Lopetegui as their new manager

However, they have now made a decision to appoint Lopetegui, who signed a new two-year extension with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) last month.

He left Porto to be appointed Spain manager in 2016, taking over from Vicente del Bosque, and will guide them at the upcoming World Cup in Russian Federation.

Zinedine Zidane walked away from his post at Real Madrid after the Champions League final, having won the competition three times in a row.

Lopetegui will go head-to-head with Cristiano Ronaldo at the tournament, with Spain set to take on Portugal in their opening group game this Friday.

Real Madrid have announced that Spanish national team coach Julen Lopetegui will take over as their manager after the World Cup in Russian Federation. They also scored 36 goals, and their form means they are one of the favourites ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation.

After guiding Spain easily through qualification to the World Cup finals, Lopetegui had agreed on a new contract up until Euro 2022 just last May, and was not among the more than 20 names which had been linked with the Bernabeu vacancy in the local media over the past two weeks.

Previously, French manager Zinidine Zidane shocked the footballing world by announcing his resignation from Real Madrid.

'Julen Lopetegui will join the club after the participation of the Spanish team in the World Cup, after two years leading the national team'.

However, Lopetegui's appointment is another surprise from Los Blancos, particularly as he only signed a new deal to remain in charge of Spain until 2020 in May, per BBC Sport.

Work with the Spanish youth teams followed.
