Sarah Sanders responds to reports of pending departure

The news also comes on the heels of reports that the White House is taking steps to shake up the press shop, ousting junior staffers and cutting down on the number of people allowed to attend daily meetings.

"Hold on Jim, I'm not going to comment on the Attorney General's specific comments that I haven't seen", fired-back Sanders.

One reporter asked Sanders whether she had any "empathy" as a parent of young children toward the families being split up by Border Patrol agents.

"Stop crossing the border illegally with children", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in defense of the policy. "But, please don't take my words out of context", Sanders said.

"It's biblical to follow the law", Sanders actually responded.

"You're a parent, don't you have any empathy?"

Ryan indicated that although they've had their "public, interesting moments", she wanted to defend Sanders because she was a "woman in this job".

"I love my job and am honored to work for @POTUS", she said.

Scoffing of sorts emanated from the group following Sanders' "short sentences" comment, as Acosta's face remained relatively expressionless.

"It should not be United States policy to traumatise children, and especially not as a form of indirect punishment of their parents", the letter reads.

Brian Karem: "Come on, Sarah, you're a parent".

"You're right, it doesn't have to be the law".

"Can you imagine the horror these kids must be going through when they come across the border?" Brian Karem: "Sarah, come on".

Acosta asked Sanders to point out where in the Bible the policy found its moral justification. Sanders went on to blame congressional Democrats for refusing to close supposed "loopholes" in immigration laws that protect migrants throughout the asylum process.

KAREM: But you're sitting there telling us it's a law.

In her first press briefing since the president returned from his meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Sanders said - in an answer that has become a mantra - that she had no personnel announcements to make. Don't you have any empathy? The law, passed in 2008 when Democrats controlled the House and signed by Republican President George W. Bush, doesn't deal with children who are illegally crossing the border with their parents but with children who are illegally crossing alone.
