"This World No Tobacco Day, WHO is drawing attention to the fact that tobacco doesn't just cause cancer, it quite literally breaks hearts".

"Most people know that using tobacco causes cancer and lung disease, but many people aren't aware that tobacco also causes heart disease and stroke - the world's leading killers", WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. The data shows that 42.4 per cent of men, 14.2 per cent of women and 28.6 per cent of all adults now either smoke and or use smokeless tobacco.

Sanjay Seth, trustee, Sambandh Health Foundation, said that tobacco use was estimated to cause almost 10 per cent of all cardiovascular diseases. Tobacco is recognised as a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Of the over 7 million tobacco-related deaths annually, about 3 million are from heart diseases and stroke, and close to 900,000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) latest data says that smoking is responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with numerous deaths occurring prematurely.

According to the survey, about 10.7 per cent of all adults in India which amounts to about 99.5 million citizens, smoke tobacco out of which men account for 19 per cent while women account for the remaining 2 per cent.

Arsen Torosyan noted the cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, adding some 12% of heart diseases develop due to smoking or exposure to the second-hand smoke. More importantly, long-term smokers can use them as a substitute for traditional cigarettes to help in quitting the habit or, at least, switch to a less risky alternative. "Along with issuing fines, we will also spread awareness on tobacco consumption", said Ravinder Kumar, public relations officer, Gurugram police.

As the country joined the global community to mark the 2018 world no tobacco day, we focus on enforcement of the National tobacco control act 2015. These types of products eliminate the smoke and reduce the levels of harmful toxic chemicals while at the same time deliver the nicotine and ritual that millions of smokers look for.

68% smokers say that they are well informed about the impact of smoking on ones health.

Speaking at an event to mark the day, WHO Regional Director, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, observed that "every year on May 31, WHO and its partners observe World No Tobacco Day to highlight the dangers associated with using tobacco, and to press for policies to reduce tobacco use".

Over the years, WHO and multilateral health agencies have encouraged global tobacco regulations and advocacy on the potential health risks of tobacco consumption. The government has already lost revenue during 2017, by playing into the hands of the tobacco industry.
