Study Says Many Women With Early Breast Cancer Might Not Need Chemo

Remarkable New Immunotherapy Treatment Helps Cure Advanced Stage Breast Cancer in Woman in U.S

A new study finds many women with early-stage cancer may be able to skip chemotherapy.

Researchers say, the results allowed them to separate women who would benefit from chemotherapy due to a higher risk of recurrent breast cancer, and those who tested at a lower risk and do not need chemo for treatment.

Prior to the study, doctors knew women with a low score on the test, less than 11, were told they could skip chemo with no ill effects.

In the all-hands effort to harness the powers of the immune system to fight cancer, scientists have reported that a new approach has eliminated all evidence of advanced-stage breast cancer in a 49-year-old woman who had run out of treatment options.

A POTENTIAL cure for cancer may have been found in the U.S. after a woman suffering from an "incurable" breast cancer that had spread to some of her organs was cured of the killer illness.

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute have put a patient with metastatic breast cancer into complete remission using a new approach to immunotherapy.

The phase III clinical trial, named "TAILORx", followed over 10,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2006 and 2010.

The TAILORx trial used the Oncotype DX test, now available on the NHS, which allows doctors to predict the likelihood of the breast cancer returning.

Two-and-a-half years after getting the new cells, the woman is cancer-free.

Otis Brawley, chief medical and scientific officer of the American Cancer Society, called the trial a good example of "precision medicine" and said it would save many women from unneeded chemotherapy.

Doctors in the USA adopted an experimental approach combining two different forms of immunotherapy after conventional hormone treatments and chemotherapy failed. If patients with higher scores receive chemotherapy, this risk of recurrence will be significantly reduced, enabling more patients to be cured. After surgery, one group got endocrine therapy only, while the other was treated with endocrine therapy plus chemotherapy. The prospective TAILORx study was created to help to discover whether chemotherapy is beneficial for women with a mid-range recurrence score of 11 to 25, as well as to prospectively confirm that a low recurrence score of 0-10 is associated with a low rate of distant recurrence if patients receive endocrine therapy without adjuvant chemotherapy.

According to researchers from the United States, early breast cancers can be successfully treated with a new form of immune therapy instead of traditional chemotherapy.

Hwu said that in addition to finding ways to make TIL therapy cheaper, faster and simpler to administer, researchers will need to figure out which patients are most likely to respond as dramatically as Perkins did.

Perkins said that she could feel the tumors shrinking within the first week of the white blood cells having been pumped into her body.

"A lot of work needs to be done, but the potential exists for a paradigm shift in cancer therapy - a unique drug for every cancer patient", he said.

"We are de-escalating toxic therapy", Dr. Kathy Albain, chair of oncology research at Loyola University School of Medicine and lead researcher of the study, said. Their study showed, for example, that chemotherapy use in patients whose cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes declined from 26.6 percent in 2013 to 14.1 percent in 2015.
