Singapore summit: Kim's running bodyguards back in action

"We don't know how developed North Korea's secure communications capabilities are, so whether Kim Jong Un will be within easy reach of his National Command Authority during his stay in Singapore is an open question", said Andrew O'Neil, a North Korea nuclear policy expert at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia.

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore".

Trump is set to meet with Kim in Singapore on Tuesday morning.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Singapore on Sunday for an unprecedented summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, an attempt to address the last festering legacy of the Cold War.

Trump has said he wants to strike a deal to get the North to give up its nuclear weapons.

He said his perception of Kim - a "bad guy with nuclear weapons" - had improved considerably following his two meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the border truce village of Panmunjom. But many say this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and given that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to his holding onto unchecked power.

A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.

A complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization "is the only outcome that the United States will accept", Pompeo told reporters on Monday evening in Singapore.

Tea for Two: What May Come of Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore?

Trump had called Kim "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea as it conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of worldwide warnings. He has been to Beijing twice and has briefly crossed the frontier at the Demilitarised Zone with South Korea to meet its president.

Larry Kudlow, Trump's economic adviser, said Sunday on CNN that Trudeau's criticism had damaged Trump's prestige before the summit - and that's why Trump reacted so strongly. He wouldn't say whether Trump would consider withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but insisted USA sanctions on the North would remain in place until the North denuclearizes.

He may be staying at the St. Regis Hotel, where China's President Xi Jinping once stayed.

But as he embarked for Singapore he changed his tune, calling it a "one-time shot" and adding he will know "within the first minute" whether an agreement will be possible.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on North Korea's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities.

"The South can not simply afford to take care of the North economically", she said.

North Korea's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun proclaimed Kim's arrival in Singapore on its front page, in unusually swift coverage of his worldwide visit.

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations.
