The lesson of today's government climbdown: we're likely heading for soft Brexit

Brexit news UK EU latest Theresa May backstop

Pro-EU Conservative backbenchers warned the prime minister on Wednesday if she "goes back" on a vow made 24 hours earlier she could yet suffer a humiliating reverse on the EU Withdrawal Bill.

"The Government's amendment today provides for a meaningful vote".

The UK government is winning the third vote as MPs vote on Lords amendments to the European Union withdrawal bill.

The disagreement centres on whether the government agreed to consider a specific clause of the rebel proposal that would hand parliament control of the Brexit process if ministers are unable to strike an exit deal by February 15, 2019.

GBP/USD has rallied to test the bear's commitments at the top of the descending channel at resistance on the back of the government winning the third vote as MPs vote on Lords amendments to the European Union withdrawal bill. It will then be discussed in the upper chamber of parliament on June 18, before returning to the elected lower house for approval at an as-yet unspecified date in the near future.

The government's eleventh hour amendment, lifted in large parts from Tory Remainer Dominic Grieve's own proposal and to be presented to the Lords on Monday, is expected to give MPs the right to veto the government's strategy if it fails to secure a political agreement with the European Union by 30 November.

However, Devon Tory Sarah Wollaston signalled that she would back Mr Grieve's amendment.

Nick said: "You were told what to do, why won't you do it?"

She added she was sure Mrs May "will honour her word".

Well what the Remainer MPs thought they heard from May does not seem compatible with Davis's red lines.

The statement said: "We have not, and will not, agree to the House of Commons binding the government's hands in the negotiations".

- PM avoids damaging "meaningful vote" defeat through new concessions.

But, the pro-EU MPs' version of what they were promised appears to differ from what they government says it offered, threatening to reignite the dispute and reviving the possibility of a revolt that would badly damage May's authority.

"If Grieve et al are correct, the Brexiteers can't stomach it".

"If she has given too much away I think there will be real anger towards her".

Remainers see it as a road map to ensuring Britain leaves with a good deal.

The solicitor general, Robert Buckland, who intervened from the dispatch box to offer the last-minute concessions that led to the would-be rebels' meeting with the prime minister, suggested that there would be no further compromise on clause C, contrary to what MPs say they were told.

Morgan admitted there was a part of the Grieve amendment that "does go further" than the prime minister was prepared to accept but said they had not been played.
