The Mission E Has a Real Name

The four-door auto with a sports vehicle shape was first unveiled to the public as the Mission E concept vehicle at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Spy shots show the Taycan as sleek sedan that sort of looks like the result of stretching the 911 into a four door.

Porsche has also shown a Mission E Cross Turismo concept, a wagon version of the electric auto.

The Taycan will be the first of Porsche's electric models but the carmaker has big plans to go the electric way. Digital projects, such as networking via Porsche Connect and data security using blockchain in sports cars, will also feature. The Model S can do its Ludicrous Mode party trick a few times before needing to cool down, but Porsche has said its Taycan will be able to maintain its performance both in sprints and for track days without issue.

The vehicle is expected to have a range of over 250 miles. With this setup, Porsche claims that the Taycan will complete a 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds and take just under 12 seconds for a 0-200 km/h speed run.

The name, announced by Chief Executive Oliver Blume at Porsche's 70th anniversary celebration on Friday, means "lively, young horse", reflecting the iconic rearing black horse on Porsche's coat of arms. "Our new electric sports vehicle is strong and dependable, said Porsche Chairman Oliver Blume".

Overall, the name fits in Porsche naming nomenclator. Still, previous suggestions have indicated a starting price in the region of $80-90k. Automakers are spending billions as they face a period of unprecedented change - stricter environmental regulations are forcing them to offer more battery-powered vehicles even as combustion-engine cars still generate the vast majority of profits.

Porsche's original goal had been to spend three billion euro ($3.53bn) on electromobility by 2022.

Under the hood, the Taycan will have electric motors and a battery pack and practically no noise except for that of the running tyres.
