Xiaomi Mi 8: Release date, specs, features and price

Among them wormed smartphones 8 Mi and 8 Mi SE.

In an event in Shenzhen in front of a packed-out stadium, Xiaomi's founder and CEO Lei Jun presented the flagship Mi 8, an anniversary smartphone strikingly similar to Apple's iPhone X, Reuters reports.

The previous iteration, the Mi Band 2 was a great fitness band and featured some of the most sought after features in an extremely affordable price range. After the unveiling of Face ID on the iPhone X, many in the industry wondered if facial recognition would become the new norm for biometric authentication, with fingerprint scanning falling by the wayside; certainly that's the direction Apple has been going in.

There's also a special Explorer Edition of the Mi 8 that will be for sale. The Mi 8 uses a 6.21-inch FHD+ Samsung AMOLED full screen display with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and 86.68% screen-to-body ratio. The device is powered by Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB RAM. The front-facing camera marks a 20MP sensor with Face Unlock feature.

The selfie snapper is 20 MP with f/2.0 aperture and also jumps the AI hype train with AI portrait selfies and AI Beautify.

It will also pack Synaptic's underscreen fingerprint scanner - Xiaomi says the Explorer Edition's scanner features pressure sensitivity, which allows it to activate, scan and unlock the phone much faster.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 starts at ¥2699 (~$420) for the 6GB + 64GB while the beefier Explorer Edition will set you back ¥3699 (around $577). The Xiaomi Mi 8 boasts premium specs with the exception of the Mi 8 SE with a watered-down version of the features. Xiaomi will charge 2,699 yuan (around Rs 28,000) for Mi 8 and 3,699 yuan (around Rs. 38,000) for the Mi 8 Explorer edition. It is powered by 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3GB/ 4GB RAM. The device will have to sync with the Xiaomi Mi Fit app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices. A petite version, the Mi 8 SE, comes with a Snapdragon 710 processor and a 5.88-inch OLED screen. The phone will go on sale in China for ¥3,699 ($580), and while that's a insane bargain when you consider the tech on offer, the device will be sold in extremely limited quantities.
