United 2026 Wins Rights to Host FIFA 2026 World Cup

United 2026 Wins Rights to Host FIFA 2026 World Cup

After controversy surrounded the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russian Federation and the 2022 finals in Qatar, the vote was the first to be decided by the FIFA congress.

The expanded 2026 men's event, featuring 48 teams for the first time, will be played in 16 different cities - 10 in the US, plus three sites in both Canada and Mexico.

The North American proposal had lined up high-profile backers, including soccer star David Beckham, who said that "the World Cup deserves to be in great places", and U.S. President Donald Trump, who combined support for the bid with a veiled threat to those that planned to vote for competing offers.

Nations at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow backed North America's joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

Morocco have now failed with five bids to hold the World Cup and are unlikely now to have the financial means to put together another bid for the foreseeable future. The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 matches, including the final, scheduled for MetLife Stadium outside New York City. The United States staged the tournament in 1994. Mexico played host to the 1970 and 1986 World Cup.

Jose Mourinho has predicted a mouthwatering World Cup quarter-final clash between England and Brazil, although the Manchester United boss believes the match-up will end in more heartache for the Three Lions.

Of the 211 Fifa member nations, 200 cast a vote at the 68th Fifa Congress in Moscow on Wednesday, with the winning bid needing a majority of 104.

The American candidate cities are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Washington, D.C. As they have never made it past the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, they will be desperate to change their fortunes and give their fans something to cheer about.

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee.
