Tiger Woods will play the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open with Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson, which feels like a grouping of Nos.

Woods will begin his quest for a fourth U.S. Open title at 1.47 PM local time (1747 GMT) at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York.

On Thursday morning, Long Island Rail Road President Phillip Eng stepped of the first train to service the platform, with the U.S. Open trophy in hand.

He also won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the 2002 championship at Bethpage.

Thomas became world No 1 for the first time last month when a strong finish to The Players Championship ended the 64-week reign of Johnson, who can reclaim top spot with a big performance at this week's FedEx St Jude Classic.

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, winners in 2011 and '15 respectively, will tee off alongside Phil Mickelson, looking to finally win the tournament after finishing runner-up on six occasions.

Three Masters winners have been grouped together, with current champion Patrick Reed set to play alongside Charl Schwartzel and Zach Johnson.

Brooks Koepka, an impressive four-shot victor at Erin Hills previous year, will begin the defence of his title alongside two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and former world No 1 Jason Day.

Seven of the world's 10 top-ranked players are in the same half of the draw, with Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama also playing early Thursday/late Friday.
