US President Donald Trump speaks as he departs from the G7 summit in the Charlevoix city of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada. "What we have is a country here in the United States, which has the lowest tariffs in the world, lowest non-tariff barriers in the world", said Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, on CNN in March.

"He was polarizing. Here's the thing". He really actually, you know what? "Of course. But that doesn't mean you reject what the G-7 stands for and just move out and ignore it".

His comment sparked a new diplomatic spat between Trudeau and the Trump administration and led Chancellor Merkel to criticize Trump's handling of the matter.

"They should have said to him, 'God speed, you are negotiating with the insane nuclear tyrant in North Korea, and we are behind you, '" Kudlow added.

Asked about Navarro's comments, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said, according to reporter Daniel Dale, "Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks".

Trudeau called the fact that the USA had based the tariffs on a national security reason "kind of insulting".

"I don't know anything about that", Kudlow said.

Protective measures like Canada's dairy tariff are common around the world.

Trump also pitched for a "reciprocal tax" on countries that he said "abuse" their trade relationships with the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had told reporters that "Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will also not be pushed around" over Trump's decision to invoke national security to justify United States tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

The spat drew in Germany and France, who sharply criticised Mr Trump's decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique hammered out at a Canadian summit on Saturday (local time), accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

He added, "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around". Trump said in a second tweet. He said USA representatives will examine the tariffs on automobiles coming into the country and bemoaned the Canadian tariffs that affect American companies and farmers.

Trump fired back after Trudeau's press conference, blasting the Canadian leader on Twitter as "very dishonest and weak".

Meantime, Trump was already looking ahead to his meeting with Kim Jong Un with a feeling of optimism.

In response to Trump's tweets on Saturday, Trudeau's office contended that the Canadian leader said nothing he had not said previously "both in public and in private conversations" with Trump. "It is essentially double crossing", Kudlow told CNN's Jake Tapper. "One thing leads to another".

The outburst against Trudeau, and by association the other G7 members, is only the latest incident in which Trump has clashed with America's closest allies, even as he has had warm words for autocrats like Kim and Russia's Vladimir Putin.
