Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

In recent weeks, Trump has criticized Canada's trade policies and Trudeau himself on Twitter. "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President", the office added. "He did a great disservice to the whole G-7".

"To be honest with you, Prime Minister Trudeau, I respect".

As the president said about Crimea, "it's been done a long time".

The photograph shows President Donald Trump sitting with his arms crossed in a chair, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel looks down at him, her hands resting on a table between them. At a Saturday afternoon press conference in La Malbaie, he blamed Barack Obama for the Russian invasion of Ukraine and complained about the USA being a "piggy bank" which he said other countries were "robbing".

French President Emmanuel Macron responded in a "courteous but very firm tone" to present the European side of the story, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe chimed in as well, the official said.

Trump announced yesterday that he would be renouncing support of the joint communique made at the end of the summit, which was a declaration of shared values and goals by the seven countries - the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan - that attended.

Trudeau argued that Trump is making a strategist mistake by placing tariffs on Canadian steel.

Navarro said they express the "sentiment" of the president, before concluding his remarks on Trudeau by borrowing descriptors from Trump's tweets: "dishonest, weak".

The annual G7 summit appeared to have weathered tensions over Trump's threats of a trade war on Saturday - until the USA president pulled out of a joint statement while citing "false statements" by Trudeau.

In return, Mr Trump made the French president his guest at his first White House state dinner, after which the U.S. president said of his visitor: "I like him a lot".

"I think we had a very open and direct discussion this afternoon, we've always had this kind of discussion".

"Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will also not be pushed around", he said.

"He says that we are the problem with tariffs".

He argued Trudeau's press conference criticisms of Trump's trade tariffs were inappropriate because of Trump's upcoming meeting with Kim, and because they represented a shift from the more cooperative work that had been done to form the communique from the seven nations.

Trump said in another tweet that Trudeau was "meek and mild" during their private meeting, only to hold a news conference calling the USA tariffs "insulting".

But Mr Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the United States market if they retaliate against his tariffs.

Officials from European delegations quickly leaked copies of the joint statement, and it was published online moments before Trump tweeted.

A German government spokesman said that his country "stands behind the communique which was collectively agreed upon". "When I'm telling them, they're smiling at me".

A German government spokesman also said that Berlin stands by the jointly agreed G7 communique in which leaders underlined the crucial role of a rules-based global trading system and promised to fight protectionism.
