The European members of the G7 unanimously oppose US President Donald Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted into the club, French President Emmanuel Macron's office said on Friday.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things ... but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300 per cent on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

Invoking his former rival Hillary Clinton, Trump touted how tough he is on Putin: "I have been Russia's worst nightmare".

He is not expected to stay till the end of the summit. A major example, she added, is Trump's summit in the coming days with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the G7 came amid increasing tensions between the US and key allies, as well as the president's increasingly warmer stance on Russian Federation.

"It used to be the G8 because Russian Federation was there and now Russian Federation is not in it", Trump said.

Previous G7 summits have seen large-scale anti-globalization protests, but Trump was a main target of the demonstration as masked anarchists set fire to U.S. flags and those of other G7 nations.

"They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table", he said.

On his way to the G-7 summit, Trump tweeted his promise to fight against "the long time unfair trade practiced against the United States".

The comments followed a string of tweets from the president railing against Canada, France and other European allies for what the president has described as an imbalanced trade relationship.

The president also offered reassurance that Canada and the USA have made progress in their trade dispute over his administration's punishing steel and aluminum tariffs on all the other G7 members. They didn't tell you that, did they? "Not fair to our farmers!", his Twitter feed states.

US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron hold a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in La Malbaie, Quebec.

He warned it is "evident" that Mr Trump and the rest of the G7 were at loggerheads over trade, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!"

And he said Trump's determination to bait his allies over trade and diplomatic engagements "would only play into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

Sitting down with Trudeau, Trump said "the relationship is probably better, as good or better than it has hever been and I think we'll get to something beneficial to Canada and the US".

Trudeau said he would continue to stand up for Canadian dairy producers and the country's supply management system.

"The introduction, for example, of restrictive tariffs on steel, on aluminum, not only for Europe but also for Canada and Mexico, in essence these are also sanctions..." "This is the U.S. levying tariffs on everybody else and then everybody else retaliating on the USA", he added.

Trudeau has worked hard to find common ground with the unpredictable president, but the personal bond he has tried to forge has been strained.

Critics said the growing USA isolation is risky at a time when Trump is making diplomatic overtures with North Korea and in the Middle East and could use the support of allies.

The Austrian government has offered to host a summit between Trump and Putin, potentially echoing a historic Cold War meeting there between a newly-elected President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, according to a White House official who was granted anonymity to discuss the matter.
