South Korean army's K-9 self-propelled howitzers take positions during an annual exercise in Paju, near the border with North Korea, South Korea, June 11, 2018.

Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., also mocked Trump, writing: "One trip and it's 'mission accomplished, ' Mr. President?"

Introduced for the Fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the provision would stop a withdraw "unless the U.S. Secretary of Defense certifies it is in our national security interest and would not significantly undermine the security of our allies in the region".

The KCNA report, as well as the joint statement after the summit, also mentioned that the president had offered North Korea unspecified security guarantees, which Pyongyang considers an indispensable precondition for nuclear disarmament. Ri is best remembered outside North Korea for her emotional deliveries of the deaths of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather.

"It's a huge win for Kim Jong Un, who now - if nothing else - has the prestige and propaganda coup of meeting one on one with the president, while armed with a nuclear deterrent", said Michael Kovrig, a northeast Asia specialist at the International Crisis Group in Washington.

In a separate tweet Wednesday, Trump addressed the issue, saying that the US would "save a fortune" by not holding the "war games".

North Korea in May cancelled talks with Seoul over "Max Thunder" joint military air exercises between the USA and the South. "It captures what could be done", Trump said Tuesday.

As Trump and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, the president sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Murphy, meanwhile, said in the statement that he's "freaked out that the president will order troops out of South Korea only for North Korea to, once again, break their word". He thinks he's coming into this meeting from a position of strength because he has reached certain capability in his nuclear missile program. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

It was unclear whether South Korea was aware of Mr Trump's decision before he announced it publicly.

South Korean Minister of Defence, Itsunori Onodera, said: "We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the US and South Korea".

Trump's tweets followed a high-profile summit which yielded a renewed promise by Kim to "denuclearize" the Korean Peninsula but was scant on details.

The president called his meeting with Kim "honest, direct and productive", and said Pyongyang promised to a "major missile site" though this was agreed after the deal was signed, explaining its absence from the document. The next scheduled major joint South Korean exercise, which typically involves tens of thousands of troops, is normally held in August.

"As expected, coverage of Kim summit with Donald Trump is plastered across first four pages of North Korea's main Rodong Sinmun".

"I find that question insulting and ridiculous and frankly ludicrous", Pompeo said.

Adam Mount, a US defence analyst, expressed anger about seeing the USA and North Korean flags side by side.

They hold joint military exercises every year that infuriate Pyongyang, which has long demanded an end to the drills and often responds with actions of its own, ratcheting up tensions. "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea", the president said on Twitter. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.
