Merkel's March 2017 visit to the White House was marked by Trump either not hearing or ignoring her offer to shake hands in the Oval Office.

Decided on following Canada's example, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that the European Union would implement counter-measures against the US tariffs on steel and aluminium, "voicing regret about President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw support for a G7 communique", Reuters reports.

Mr Seibert noted that "other photographers captured other scenes".

In response to Mr Trump's decision to withhold USA support for the summit conclusions, a senior United Kingdom government source said: "We stand by the commitments made in the G7 communique".

"I know it didn't look friendly", Trump said.

His comment sparked a new diplomatic spat between Trudeau and the Trump administration and led Chancellor Merkel to criticize Trump's handling of the matter.

Merkel also commented on the statement of the US President, informs Bloomberg. "That was, that was such an innocent picture".

Merkel shared a photo of herself, leaning toward the president, who appears with his arms crossed. Aides for each of the leaders stood by the side, including top economic adviser Larry Kudlow and national security adviser John Bolton. Trump initially refused to sign the statement, but agreed to sign it prior to his departure.

"I left, everybody was happy, everybody shook", Trump said. Take the man standing between Merkel and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, for instance.

Like virtually all German media, Berlin's daily Tagesspiegel ran the picture prominently and said Trump's caustic tweets upending the summit conclusions had "shaken the West".

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks. Maybe we can help", in a tart reference to alleged collusion between Russian President Vladimir Putin's government and the Trump team to influence the USA presidential election.

And in a picture released by the Japanese leaders officials, Shinzo Abe looks powerful as he towers over the seated United States leader. Speaking on the condition of anonymity a Canadian official told national broadcaster CBC that not only had Trudeau made these remarks prior to the meeting, on US television last week, he had also informed Trump of his position before he went on air. Photographs from the Group of Seven summit provided by the German and American governments suggest contrasting images of their leaders.
