Trump Says Singapore Summit Is `One-Time Shot' for Kim Jong Un

President Trump speaks with Kim Yong Chol, former North Korean military intelligence chief and one of leader Kim Jong Un's closest aides, after their meeting in the Oval Office of the White House on June 1.

Donald Trump says he is prepared to be wowed by Kim Jong-un at their "one-shot" talks on Tuesday, but added that he will sense straight away if the meeting is futile and "won't waste Kim's time".

"After eight years of weak, pathetic, spineless leadership under Obama, things have changed", Hannity said, noting that Trump has actually responded to North Korean threats.

"If it's hard for the USA ... to continue pushing 'maximum pressure, ' " Kotani said of Trump's campaign of sanctions and diplomacy meant to bring the North to the negotiating table, "then Japan should continue to verify the commitment of the global community on behalf of Washington". "And if I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time, I'm not going to waste his time".

Some observers believe that Trump shouldn't open negotiations by focusing on a peace deal, and instead should use the prospect of such a treaty as leverage to get the North to abandon its weapons.

The summit idea seemed to appear out of nowhere back in March, when Trump announced a meeting.

The one thing it is impossible for North Koreans to understand, however, is how big the difference in prosperity is between their country and developed nations like the US and South Korea.

Trump even went so far as to say he would consider inviting Kim to visit the United States if the June 12 summit in Singapore goes well.

Mr Trump already has two big wins to show his domestic audience - he welcomed home three United States detainees on their release from North Korea and can show them Pyongyang's destruction of its only nuclear test site.

It will be the first time that a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader have met. Trump cited the unprecedented nature of the meeting and said he was convinced that Kim wants to do good things for his country. "It's a big gamble and I'm not sure I have a good answer for what is best".

After meeting with Trump on Thursday in Washington, Abe said that he wanted to talk directly with Pyongyang. "That's what I do", the president said.

"There is a feeling of excitement in this school - many students, parents and teachers are highly anticipating this summit", said Lee. "But certainly if it goes well", Trump told reporters during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "We are still, in a way, brothers and sisters", he said.

"Now it seems to devolve to something more like a get acquainted meeting, which is something that North Korea has wanted to do for decades".

Both leaders are expected to arrive tonight, and Mr Dann said the mood was a mix of optimism, that the leaders are at least talking, and skepticism if there will be a breakthrough of denuclearisation of the North Korea regime. Their appearance comes days before a summit between the real leaders in the city-state.
