Trump talks heating up

North Korea leader Kim arrives in Singapore ahead of Trump meeting

The meeting will be monitored and dissected around the globe for a sense of whether one of the world's greatest national security threats - Kim's nuclear arsenal - can be solved.

The event-specific symbol features what appears to be a high-five between a hand representing the USA president and one representing the North Korean dictator known for executing his political enemies and exiling large swaths of his nation to prison camps, where they face starvation and torture. It wants a reciprocal step-by-step process in which North Korean concessions are met with substantive USA commitments in other related areas. Trump plans to brief reporters following the summit's conclusion, and will leave for the U.S. around 8pm local time (midnight NZT).

There has been no indication Rodman would be involved in any official talks at the summit, which is aimed at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and missiles in exchange for economic incentives and security guarantees.

Deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah said in early May that North Korea had agreed not to criticize upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.

Going into the meeting - which is set for 9 a.m. local time in Singapore (9 p.m. EDT Monday) - the president should remember that North Korea only looks out for itself, Wagar said.

Their first meeting will be just the two men, with their translators, without any advisers present.

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday, both staying at luxurious and heavily guarded hotels about a kilometre and a half apart, with Trump at the Shangri-La Hotel and Kim at the St. Regis Hotel. Trump had previously said the talks might extend beyond the first day.

Details were not shared about how the discussions have progressed so far and Trump and Kim have yet to meet face-to-face.

Trump's supporters have floated the idea that forging such a treaty, which would need a signoff from China and South Korea, would deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sebastian Gorka said Monday that President Trump's historic summit with Kim Jong Un can yield two large results.

At issue is whether Kim would be willing to abandon a nuclear weapons program that has advanced rapidly in recent years, posing an increasing threat to the United States and its allies.

A sit-down with the USA president is something North Korea has long pushed for. They also say by winning the prestige of a meeting with the world's most powerful leader, Mr Kim has already gained a victory. The national security adviser's previous remark that disarmament should follow the "Libya model" embraced by Moammar Qaddafi - who after giving up his nuclear weapons was later overthrown and killed in a US-backed uprising - prompted an angry reply from Pyongyang.

In any case, the Trump administration has no choice.

It's not just the logistics of Kim's trip that are unclear. It seems highly unlikely that the north would be happy for the U.S. to maintain a defensive nuclear alliance with the south that is essentially directed against Pyongyang.

What has North Korea said?

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters Monday the historic meeting to take place between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is "truly a mission of peace". "It's what happens after the agreement that really is the big point".

As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, the president sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".
