US fighter jet crashes into sea off Japan - reports

The jet reportedly took off from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa and crashed some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the coast.

About an hour after receiving the initial information, Japanese military officials spotted and rescued the pilot who sustained "non-life-threatening" injuries, Onodera said.

The F-15 developed technical problems in flight, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, Lt Col David Honchul, the chief spokesman for the U.S. forces in Japan, told the Independent.

NAHA, Japan (Kyodo) - A U.S. F-15 fighter jet crashed into the sea off Okinawa on Monday morning, with the pilot rescued by a Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter, government sources said.

Kadena is the largest U.S. military base in Japan, and hosts around 47,000 American troops under a decades-long security alliance. "Accidents involving United States military aircraft are occurring repeatedly".

The minister added he hopes to obtain a detailed report on the cause of the latest crash as Japan also uses the F-15. "We would like to continue asking for their flight safety".

"If that happens, we can not fulfill our responsibilities to our children and grandchildren", Onaga said.

Many Okinawa residents blame the USA bases for crime, accidents and pollution and want them moved off the island, the Reuters news agency points out, adding that, "A series of emergency landings and parts falling from us military aircraft have highlighted safety concerns". "I don't think there is a country like this among developed nations". The last F-15 based out of Kadena to crash was in 2006.

Okinawa has seen a series of crashes involving other USA military aircraft over the years.
