United Kingdom justice minister resigns over Brexit ahead of key votes

They reassured anti-Brexit MPs that the government would accept some of their core demands to give parliament a meaningful say on the terms of Britain's European Union divorce, including - potentially - a new deadline for a deal to be agreed with Brussels that could make it hard for the government.

As a result, they withdrew their objections and voted with the government, sparing May an embarrassing defeat.

Labour's Brexit policy chief, Keir Starmer, said May had been forced to avoid a "humiliating defeat" and "to enter negotiations with her backbenchers". With that being the case, Parliament seems highly unlikely to vote down the Brexit deal proposed to it in the autumn.

Phillip Lee, who resigned this morning, gave an impassioned speech from the "naughty corner" on the backbenches - flanked by Remainers including Bob Neill, Nicky Morgan, receiving congratulations for his decision by Soubry and Sarah Wollaston.

But the resignation by Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of the government's Brexit strategy, underlined the deep rifts in the party over Brexit that makes such votes anything but easy.

"She said that anything which undermines the government at home would make the negotiations with the European Union more hard".

Seeking to placate would-be Conservative rebels, government frontbenchers offered to meet them to discuss their concerns, and agreed to "engage positively" on a "compromise" put forward by one of them, former attorney general Dominic Grieve. Amendment 19 would enhance the powers of parliament in the Brexit process by making a Commons vote on the final withdrawal terms a "meaningful vote".

"In all conscience, I can not support the Government's decision to oppose this amendment because doing so breaches such fundamental principles of human rights and Parliamentary sovereignty".

The shock move came as the Prime Minister warned senior ministers in her Cabinet that defeat on a series of Lords amendments over the next two days would undermine the Government and make negotiations with Brussels harder.

Issues most likely to provoke rebellions include the "meaningful vote" and the question of whether the date of Brexit should be written into law - both due this afternoon - as well as whether the United Kingdom should stay in the customs union or EEA, which should come early on Wednesday evening.

Two years after Britain voted to leave the European Union, and eight months before it's due to leave on March 29, 2019, the bloc is frustrated with what it sees as a lack of firm proposals from the United Kingdom about future relations. A paper laying out the U.K. government position, due to be published this month, has been delayed because the Cabinet can not agree on a united stance.

"The Government's amendment today provides for a meaningful vote".

Parliamentary debates about complex legal amendments rarely rouse much heat, but passions run high over anything to do with Brexit. The Daily Express featured the British flag as its front page with the headline: "Ignore the will of the people at your peril".

"I trust our PM to honor the undertaking she gave", said Anna Soubry, one of the pro-EU Tory rebels.

"We cannot remain in the Customs Union and sign our own trade deals meaning that Britain could not make the most of the opportunities that Brexit presents". "They want us to regain control of our borders", he said.
