U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un walk together before their working lunch during their summit at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore June 12, 2018.

Shortly after the June 12 summit in Singapore, a senior defense official told reporters that the U.S. would present a timeline to North Korea with specific "asks".

But doing so would represent a fundamental change on the peninsula: there has been no direct civilian communication between the two Koreas since their division was sealed by the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War - not even post. But nearly all are over 70 years old and each year there are fewer survivors.

"The reunion of separated families is an urgent problem that is racing against the clock due to the increasing number of deaths each day", said Ahn Chan-il, a North Korean defector and analyst with the World Institute of North Korean studies.

"It's remarkable", said Peter Ward, a North Korea researcher at Seoul National University. Many observances took place in South Korea involving officials including South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

South Korea commemorated the outbreak of the Korean War as the two states continue to work toward better relations following their landmark leadership summit on April 27. The Korea Times called on North Korea "to pay more attention to humanitarian issues".

The South Korean prime minister said moving the artillery is under discussion amid thawing bilateral tensions.

Those selected to participate are usually screened and instructed to ensure they praise the leader and describe their lives in the North in a positive light.

Lee also said Monday he has confirmation North Korea is in the process of repatriating the remains of USA troops from the Korean War.

He said that framework couldn't be filled out without, Kim "making clear his intent to denuclearize", Pompeo said. "There will be specific asks and there will be a specific timeline when we present the North Koreans with our concept of what implementation of the summit agreement looks like". However, no specific measures were mentioned.

Referring to Trump's decision to suspend joint military exercises with South Korea, which North Korea has long denounced as provocative, Pompeo told CNN this move would last "only so long as there is a good faith negotiation progress, productive results being achieved".
