Having secured pole position on Saturday, Vettel led away comfortably at the start of the race and again eased clear of any pressure following an early Safety Car period. "I'm sure it's going to be on the way soon".

"It's like when a race is stopped and can't be restarted, you take it back prior to the lap where the red flag was given".

"I even watched on TV and it said 'final lap.' I asked and they said 'keep pushing.' I was a bit confused". With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's vehicle this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to auto issues at the start of the session.

The day was less positive for two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who was celebrating his 300th Formula One race.

Vettel's victory in Canada was Ferrari's first at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve which is named after the team's former driver.

Sebastian Vettel led from start to finish, staying at the front for every single lap, and the top six stayed the same save for Daniel Ricciardo leaping ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

The team took some time to find its pace over the weekend with Vettel not fully at ease with the auto until qualifying when he found the set-up he wanted to deliver an impressive pole, from which he dictated the race and converted into an equally impressive win. "It's great when you have a session like that".

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who dominated much of practice, turned in a mature, error-free effort to take third place and quiet the storm of criticism swirling around him following a string of errors and crashes, including one at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with Ricciardo in April.

Stroll, 19, was in is second Canadian GP.

His engine was six races old but Hamilton would have expected better. The Briton has won the last three on the track that seems to suit the Mercedes vehicle with its heavy braking after long straightaways and tight chicanes.

After taking pole position by less than a tenth of the second from Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, Vettel believes the boost in engine performance was crucial for Sunday's result. It is a strong track for us, but all weekend long we did little mistakes, from the beginning on. Ferrari have not won the drivers' championship since 2007 when it was Kimi Räikkönen who claimed the title for them and after Vettel's previous victories in Australia and Bahrain, this result gives great impetus to their attempt to end the drought. Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have dominated the field this season. "It was pretty straightforward, and in terms of strategy we did what we wanted to do".
