Visa payments are now down across the UK

Visa has said it is experiencing problems with its card processing systems is preventing payments being made by card in many stores across the UK.

Several Irish banks have confirmed their customers have been effected by the outage.

Angry customers also took to social media to vent about their cards not working.

Paymentsense, which provides card machines, online payment gateways and virtual terminals to some 60,000 independent businesses in Britain and Ireland, advised users to try paying via contactless transactions. "We will update once the issue has been resolved". "If there was ever a reason to not go cashless, visa crashing nationally is it", Twitter user Rachel Crooks said.

Any transactions carried out across the United Kingdom will not complete after one of the biggest problems with the card payment system was confirmed.

The card payments network, which can process up to 65,000 payments a second, said it was investigating the cause of the outage in Europe.

The Bank of England, which regulates Visa in the United Kingdom, said it is aware of the issue and is working with the company to solve the problem.
