What’s behind Trump’s weighing of Martha Stewart pardon?

Trump Says He'll Pardon Dinesh D'Souza

The wife of imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) reacted to reports that President Trump is considering a presidential pardon for him.

Stewart was convicted in 2004 for lying to investigators and obstruction of justice pertaining to a stock sale, while Blagojevich is now serving out a 14-year sentence for trying to exchange an appointment for the U.S. Senate seat former President Barack Obama vacated in 2008 for campaign funds.

Trump made the comments aboard Air Force I en route to a fundraising trip in Texas. The Democratic former governor is in the middle of a 14-year federal prison term for convictions on bribery and corruption charges. Some have argued that Blagojevich's 14-year prison sentence was disproportionate for to his crimes. They were all prosecuted by district attorneys who are now Trump antagonists in the ongoing probe of whether the president colluded with Russian Federation and obstructed justice. "What they did to him was frightful".

I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated.

Hours earlier, Trump said on Twitter he would pardon D'Souza.

He said that he spoke to D'Souza for three minutes on Wednesday night to tell him about the pardon and "he nearly had a heart attack". "If you read his statement, it was a foolish statement with a lot of bravado".

"18 years in jail for being stupid and saying things that every other politician, you know that many other politicians say", the president said.

D'Souza, 53, admitted in 2014 he illegally reimbursed two "straw donors" who donated $10,000 each to the unsuccessful 2012 US Senate campaign in NY of Wendy Long, a Republican he had known since attending Dartmouth College in the 1980s. "I am very proud of the work we did with Mark Burnett Productions and Mr. Trump, who was an executive producer, on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart". And I'm seriously thinking about it. D'Souza had plead guilty to a felony campaign finance violation. Individual contributions to any one candidate were limited to $5,000 at the time. Long ended up losing the 2012 race to incumbent Democratic Sen.

He also said the case of Martha Stewart has crossed his mind.

In February, D'Souza apologized for sending a tweet that made fun of students from a high school in Parkland, Fla., who were upset after the Florida House voted down a proposed ban on a type of semi-automatic rifles known as assault weapons.

Well, both of them may be getting an official reprieve from the Commander in Chief. Despite the backlash, D'Souza is scheduled to speak at a two-day event being put on next month by the Republican Party of Florida.
