Philadelphia 76ers' Ben Simmons beats out Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum for Rookie of the Year

The NBA has named Aussie star Ben Simmons the league's Rookie of the Year at the NBA Awards in Santa Monica, California. The award has previously been won by the likes of Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Vince Carter, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'Neal, Larry Bird, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, and Michael Jordan.

'I'd like to thank my family ... my teammates, my great coach and the city of Philadelphia for really embracing me, ' Simmons said after accepting the award.

The Australian was injured the entire 2016/17 season with a foot fracture, but remained with the 76ers and worked out with the team until making his game debut the past season. Just how much remains to be seen, but according to FiveThirtyEight's CARMELO NBA Player Projection, Simmons is projected to be worth more than $400 million over the next seven years.

Mitchell wore pointed shirts to games, including one that defined the word rookie as: 'An athlete playing his or her first season as a member of a professional sports team'. Mitchell even arrived to Monday's awards show in a van that underscored his point. "I try not to let the media hype things up or fans".

The NBL has not announced its schedule for next season yet, but reports in Australia suggest tipoff will be put back to the second week in October to allow the National Basketball Association games to be played first.

"That doesn't take anything away from Jayson or Donovan".

Simmons helped Philadelphia to a 52-30 record, including ending the season with a 16-game winning streak. The Celtics' season ended when the Cleveland Cavaliers downed them in seven games during the Eastern Conference Finals.

Simmons, meanwhile, was exposed in the playoffs by the Celtics for his inability to make mid-range and three-point shots.
