Pew Research Center conducted the survey in the spring of 2018, which also reveals how the proportion of teenagers who admit that they're online "almost constantly" has nearly doubled since a similar study on the subject in 2014-15.

U.S. teenagers are ditching Facebook in favour of rival platforms YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat, a study says.

Now, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat are significantly more popular among younger users than Facebook. Facebook was fourth at 51% - a figure that's down from 71% in a comparable poll three years ago.

Although the study was only conducted among almost 750 teens in a one month period starting this spring, the new numbers might be worrying for Facebook.

"The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago", research associate Monica Anderson, the lead author of the report, said in a statement.

However, teens seem to have mixed views on how much social media impacts their lives, the survey suggests.

According to a new Pew Research Center survey, the world's largest social network is no longer the most popular online platform for teens.

The Pew Research Center revealed on Thursday that only 51% of United States teens use Facebook. The Pew analysis was based on a survey of 1,058 parents who have a teenager between 13 and 17, as well as interviews with 743 teens themselves.

Use of Facebook was markedly higher among lower-income teens, with 70% of those living in households earning less than $30,000 a year using the platform, compared with just 36% of those whose annual family income is $75,000 or more.

YouTube, which wasn't included as a social media platform in the 2015 study, is the most popular, used by 85 percent of teens polled.

However, 45 percent of teens indicated social media had no positive or negative impact in their life.

Another statistic that leaps off the page is the near ubiquitous use of smartphones among teens.
