With a production budget around $162 million, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" looks like another win for Marvel.

Following the strong Thursday night box office, it was speculated Ant-Man 2 could open close to $100 million, as the $11.5 million was similar to Guardians of the Galaxy and higher than Doctor Strange, but if I had to guess, there was really no word-of-mouth promotion by general fans, so nobody rushed to see it at the theaters. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom took 3rd place with $28.5 million, bringing its worldwide take to just over a billion dollars. As per last weekend, the global estimates are not available at this time. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film earned $76 million domestically and raked in an additional $85 million overseas for a grand total of $161 million, which is higher than the studio had initially projected. Ant-Man and the Wasp is the first Marvel project featuring a female superhero's name in the title and female superhero in a lead role. The studio has had a string of box office hits in 2018 with "Avengers: Infinity War" racking up over $2 billion and counting, and "Black Panther" passing $1.3 billion globally.

Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge debuted early on the 4th of July, getting a head start on the weekend, earning over $ 17 million with a grand total of $31 million, coming in 4th place. "The "Purge" movies have pocketed over $360 million globally". In three weeks, the dinosaur tentpole has earned $333.3 million in North America. Everyone's favourite crime-fighting family has crossed the US$500 million mark domestically and US$700 million worldwide. So far, Solo has made $380 million at the worldwide box office.

Elsewhere, Sony's Sicario: Day of the Soldado picked up another $7.3 million, taking the domestic tally to $35 million and rounding out the top 5. Also releasing this week, Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge is the latest success in the now, four-film franchise, Roadside's documentary Whitney fell just shy of a spot in the weekend top ten and Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You was a smashing success in limited release. Boots Riley's film brought in US$717,302 when it opened in 16 theatres. Incredibles 2 made $29 million at the United States box office this weekend, bring its domestic box office total to $504 million.

The 2018 box office, which just hit $6.5 billion, is up 9 percent from previous year, according to ComScore.
