Apple's own Lightning to USB 3 camera adaptor breaks USB Restricted Mode

It's also worth noting that, even with the mode enabled, you won't need to go back to your settings menu every time you want to connect your favorite accessory to your device. Interestingly, as per the researchers, authorities and private companies don't need any specific USB accessory to reset the counter.

The new USB Restricted Mode in iOS 11.4.1 simply prevents any USB accessories from connecting if the phone has not been unlocked in the last hour.

As a concession to user convenience, the restrictions on the Lightning port only comes into effect if the Lightning port is not now being used, and the device has not been unlocked for more than a hour.

Of course, this only works if the device hadn't entered in USB Restricted Mode by the time the police obtained it. If you have accessories that you want to continue working after your iPhone has been sitting locked, you can actually toggle the option on to remove the one hour limit.

Importantly, this technique would only work if the iOS device is not already in USB Restricted Mode when captured.

The research team isn't sure if third-party adaptors have a similar effect, but this same method can't be achieved with Apple's Lightning to 3.5mm adaptor.

Elcomsoft engineer Oleg Afonin noted that testing showed that once USB Restricted Mode kicks in, there is no obvious way to break it.

iOS 11.4.1 is mostly bug fixes, reports 9to5Mac, but it does make the Find My AirPods feature more reliable.

iOS 11.4.1 includes bug fixes and improves the security of your iPhone or iPad. In addition to appearing in the finished version of iOS 11.4.1, it's also available in the current beta versions of iOS 12. The Grayshift boxes plug into the Lightning port and remove prolonged delays between PIN code attempts, allowing law enforcement (or criminals) to brute-force an unlock. However, this doesn't mean that the USB connectivity with an Apple device is entirely safe.
