In the latest player rankings, which also takes into account India's 2-0 and 2-1 series win against Ireland and England, respectively, Finch leads Pakistan's left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman by 45 points.

Earlier, fielding errors allowed Australia to get off to a flier, with Aaron Finch (47) putting together a 95-run opening stand with D'Arcy Short (76).

It is also Pakistan's first series win against Australia in the past 28 years, the last time Pakistan won Austral-Asia Cup played in Sharjah in 1990.

Australia coach Justin Langer has hinted that the current T20I skipper Aaron Finch is likely to be appointed as the captain of the one-day global (ODI) team as well.

The 31-year-old Victorian eventually finished the T20Is (also comprising a one-off against England at Edgbaston) in the top position with 891 points. Slightly built and a shade under six feet tall, Fakhar Zaman doesn't have the hardware to follow the same method.

His incredible production was duly rewarded as the latest rankings published by the ICC has seen him soar to the number two spot, behind just Australia captain Aaron Finch. But such is the confidence in this Pakistan side, the never-say-die attitude inculcated by head coach Arthur and captain Sarfaraz, that Australia's batting success in the previous game against Zimbabwe was taken as a challenge to be met head-on.

Nic Maddinson, who managed scores of 5 and 2 in his first two global limited-overs games in almost five years on this tour, has been dropped.

The injured Babar Azam, Colin Munro and Glenn Maxwell all moved down, occupying the three spots below Finch, Zaman and Rahul, while further down on the list, there were more such interesting changes.

However, the T20I rankings remain crucial as only Australia and the next nine highest-ranked sides will automatically qualify for the 2020 World T20 set to be held in Australia. Short has broken into the top 10 for the first time in his career in 10th position, moving up 18 places; Roy has gained 19 places and is now 15th; while Mire has rocketed 202 places to claim 25th position - 7 behind Hamilton Masakadza.
