Mr Trump renewed his call for other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to pay in more to the Western alliance after years in which U.S. taxpayers have, he said, borne an "unfair" share of military spending.

The United States, for a number of geopolitical reasons, is vehemently objecting to the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. "Russian gas can and should be part of the European market, but that market needs to be open and competitive".

"We're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all these countries (via Nato)".

This is not the first time Trump has bashed Germany over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. "Explain that. And it can't be explained - you know that", Trump said.

According to the UralSib expert, the situation that Trump described at the meeting with Stoltenberg on July 11, where Russian Federation contributes 60 to 70% of Germany's presumably gas imports, is only hypothetical. According to Trump, after the installation of this gas pipeline, Germany will get about 70% of its energy resources from Russian Federation.

Trump's attack on Nord Stream 2 has triggered harsh reaction in Germany. There will be terminals built in Germany or there will be pipelines built from Belgian and Dutch terminals - that's also possible.

Moscow is eager to go ahead with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline for it can double the gas exports to Germany under the Baltic Sea while Washington is upset with the idea, even saying that firms that invested in the pipeline risked sanctions, the report added.

The Nord Stream and Turk Stream developments are controversial because they will connect Russian gas fields to the central European market, bypassing neighbors like Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Trump's remarks showed the U.S. was eyeing to scuttle Russia's gas supplies to Europe to push its own energy sector, the report said.

"As has been proven in the past, a trilateral process is the most effective platform to seek a satisfactory solution to the gas matters important for involved parties and to gas transit via Ukraine beyond 2019", Šefčovič said.
