Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike completed an impressive turnaround as Croatia beat England 2-1 in Moscow to reach the World Cup final for the first time in their history.

In Wednesday's clash against Croatia, it was a case of delight to despair, as England threw away a 1-0 lead and allowed Croatia back into the game in the second half, before eventually getting knocked out of the tournament by Mario Mandžukić's killer blow in extra time.

"I think in the first half, we were really good and we maybe could've got another and in periods throughout the game we had chances".

"But knockout football is fine margins and when you have spells in the game and when you have chances against real quality, you've got to make them count".

"We were planning to leave, but now we have to stay until Monday", said Sinisa Pavlek, a Croatian living in Germany as he emerged from the stadium with a broad smile on his face.

After a goalless first 15 minutes of extra-time, and penalties looking like a big possibility, it was Croatia that ended England's dream of World Cup glory when Mario Mandzukic crept it at the far post to fire home what would ultimately be the victor. This is an awesome achievement for us - it's a dream come true after such a long time.

Gareth Southgate will keep the faith with his first-choice XI for tonight's crucial World Cup semi-final against Croatia. "We have to be proud". The team will be stronger for that.

The national broadcaster, HRT, started its post-match programme with presenters and studio guests jumping around and chanting, while Robert Prosinecki, a member of Croatia's bronze-winning side in 1998, said: "We murdered the English in the second half!".

"We got some control back in extra time and showed some more composure".

England boss Gareth Southgate - on the day that was dubbed Waistcoat Wednesday in his honour back home - named an unchanged side to face Croatia, while Zlatko Dalić surprisingly made just one change from the side that beat Russian Federation on penalties in the quarter-final, bringing in midfield Marcelo Brozović for striker Andrej Kramarić. Plenty of others captured the moment England fans were so loud in defeat that you could hardly hear what Slaven Bilic and Ryan Giggs had to say.

England will return to their Repino base near Saint Petersburg ahead of Saturday's third place play-off against Belgium, a repeat of their final group match.

"Yeah of course [I want to play]".
