Donald Trump lambasts European Union over $5.1bn fine for Google

The EU has fined Google a record €4.3bn over Android antitrust

The US president took to Twitter to lash out at the European Union, which handed the penalty to the search giant over its Android operating system.

But it's not going to be easy to just ditch Android, and one of Bloomberg's sources actually suggests the company may not be that serious about the idea - calling it a "senior-engineer retention project" created to keep Google's talent busy so they don't go and join rival companies. In this way, it has cemented the dominance of its search engine.

Required manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and browser app (Chrome), as a condition for licensing Google's app store (the Play Store). Our case is about three types of restrictions that Google has imposed on Android device manufacturers and network operators to ensure that traffic on Android devices goes to the Google search engine, ' explains European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager of the Commission's findings. Finally, the Commission claimed that Google was preventing Android manufacturers from developing custom versions of the operating system or selling phones that use them, making it even harder for competitors to gain a foothold. These practices have denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits. Google has already stopped paying OEMs and carriers in order to have Google search be the exclusive search offering on devices after the European Union started to dig into the issue back in 2014, so that's one thing off of Google's plate already. "They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere".

The president appeared to be using the antitrust fine as a salvo in his escalating trade war with the EU.

Google hinted that the harsh decision would force it to charge Smartphone manufacturers for Android platform which would disturb the proprietary systems over open platforms.

We may see this new software only in Google devices at first, but it's not clear if the rest of the devices from other companies will have to make the transition.

A Google spokesperson told Digital Trends that what's resulted has been "a vibrant ecosystem, rapid innovation, and lower prices" that don't add up to an antitrust scenario - rather, they're "classic hallmarks of robust competition".
