Donald Trump names Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

Unlike Forrest Gump, Judge Kavanaugh is regarded on all sides as one of the most brilliant jurists of his generation.

FreedomWorks, the conservative advocacy group, issued a statement applauding Trump for choosing Judge Kavanaugh.

He is also an enemy of former President Bill Clinton after he investigated his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Kavanaugh served as a senior White House official under President George W Bush before Bush picked nominated him to the appeals court in 2003. Donald Trump with Brett Kavanaugh and his family on Monday.

In picking the 53-year-old Kavanaugh, Trump aimed to entrench conservative control of the court for years to come with his second lifetime appointment to the nation's highest judicial body in his first 18 months as president. The White House invited a number of senators to attend the Monday night announcement. But Kavanaugh wrote in a 2016 opinion that it was "unconstitutionally structured" because it gave too much power to a "single, unaccountable, unchecked" director. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, a former U.S. attorney, is a member of the Democratic Party that is expected to provide the resistance to Trump's pick in the Senate's confirmation process.

Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on abortion.

Senate confirmation of Kavanaugh could create the most conservative court since the justices blocked a number of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programmes in the 1930s. At the top of that list is abortion. Democrats and pro-abortion activists are concerned that the Roe v Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide in 1973, could be overturned.

What is nearly certain - and those across the political spectrum agree - is that Kavanaugh's selection will spark a major confirmation battle in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority and opposition Democrats say they will fight to prevent the high court from swinging further to the right.

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case. He works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

Assuming Kavanaugh's candidacy receives support in the Senate Judiciary Committee, he would need a simple majority of Senate votes to be placed on the high court. Past year the president appointed Neil Gorsuch after the Senate refused to consider Barack Obama's nomination, Merrick Garland, to replace the late Antonin Scalia. The president spent the days leading up to his announcement discussing the pros and cons of various contenders with aides and allies.

The conservative senator tweeted Monday that he looks forward to the upcoming Senate hearings, reviewing the circuit court judge's record "and meeting personally with Judge Kavanaugh, with an open mind". "I don't think he did that", Santorum told CNN's Chris Cuomo.

"What matters is not a judge's political views but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the Constitution require".

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. He called it the "fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp".

"The stakes for our democracy are has high as they have ever been, if not higher", Aron said.
