Emmett Till Murder Investigation Reopened Because of 'New Evidence'

DOJ reopens Emmett Till case after ‘new information’ arises report

The Department of Justice has reopened the case surrounding the killing of the black teen after receiving "new information", The Associated Press reported Thursday.

Emmett Till was 14 years old when he visited family in the Mississippi Delta during the summer of 1955.

The renewed investigation was first revealed in a recent federal report, which didn't specify what new information investigators were acting on.

Tyson is the only journalist or historian known to have interviewed Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman who claimed Emmett harassed her, leading to his lynching and murder. While at a local store, Till was said to have either whistled at a white woman named Carolyn Bryant Donham, grabbed her and made crude sexual comments.

Not even a month after the boy's body was pulled from the river, an all-white jury acquitted Carolyn Bryant's husband, Roy, and another man, J.W. Milam, of Emmett's murder, despite eyewitnesses identifying the defendants. The men later confessed to the crime in a magazine interview but weren't retried.

Mississippi District Attorney Dewayne Richardson, whose circuit oversees the community in which Emmett was abducted, offered his opinion on the development.

The decision by his mother, Mamie Till, to hold an open casket funeral, and the subsequent photographs of his mutilated body in Jet magazine helped galvanize the budding U.S. civil rights movement.

"'We don't want to talk to you, '" the man said before going back inside", Reeves wrote.

"When I heard that she said he didn't do anything worthy of death and heard she said she didn't tell the truth I was pleased and satisfied", commented Till's cousin. But it was issued in March following the publication past year of "The Blood of Emmett Till". Images of his mutilated body gave witness to the depth of racial hatred in the Deep South and helped build momentum for subsequent civil rights campaigns.

The prosecutor with jurisdiction over the MS community where Till was abducted, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson, declined to comment on whether federal authorities had given him new information since they reopened the investigation.

Donham, however, would later testify that Till took hold of her wrist and asked for a date.

Weeks after murdering Till, Roy Bryant and Milam were acquitted after a jury deliberation that lasted just one hour. She later admitted to Tyson her testimony was not true.

The book says a white woman acknowledged she wasn't truthful when she testified that the 14-year-old Till grabbed her and whistled at her in a store in 1955. I don't know what's - we don't know. "Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him", the book quotes her as saying. Sen.

The evidence, which was heard after jurors had been sent out, was ruled inadmissible by the judge.
