Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif given 10-year jail term

His daughter, Maryam Nawaz has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in the Avenfield corruption case, Geo TV reported.

Shehbaz Sharif vowed that he will go to every "nook and corner of the country to make the masses aware of the miscarriage of justice" - and that another verdict, this time in the "court of the people", is set to be rendered in the July 25 elections. A Joint Investigation Team, constituted by a three-member Apex court bench to probe and prosecute the accused, produced 18 witnesses who were cross-examined by the defense counsel.

"Today's verdict shows that these Avenfield apartments were purchased using corruption money", prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi told reporters, citing the name of the apartment building in London.

Three-time prime minister Sharif resigned as Pakistan prime minister previous year after the Supreme Court disqualified him from holding public office and ruled that graft cases be filed against the beleaguered leader and his children over the Panama Papers scandal.

Maryam in her tweets stressed that the resolve to fight against injustice had increased following the verdict. The sentencing also disqualified Nawaz and Safdar for life. The roads leading to the complex were also closed to traffic.

Nawaz and Maryam attended the majority of hearings, skipping a few as they visited London in between to spend time with Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

The Avenfield case was among the three corruption cases filed against the former premier and his children by the NAB on the Supreme Court's orders in the Panama Papers case which disqualified Sharif.

Sharif, his daughter and his son-in-law all received prison sentences Friday for their roles in the massive corruption scandal that brought down his premiership.

The court has also ruled that the Avenfield apartments of the Sharif family, in their possession since 1993, shall be seized by the federal government.

1990 - Elected prime minister for the first time.

Analysts believe that their return might boost the chances of good showing in elections by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz due to sympathy vote.

Sharif, who is in London tending to his critically ill wife, is expected to appeal.

Pakistan's deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said he has been punished because he tried to turn the course of Pakistan's 70-year history.

He further said, "There was no solid legal evidence in the entire case".
