Fans threw eggs at the players of South Korea upon arrival home

England fans celebrated Germany's exit

Mexico has not made it past the knockout Round of 16 for the past six World Cups.

"It's very, very hard to put it into words", said Germany defender Mats Hummels, a member of the team that won in Brazil four years ago.

The matchups: South Korea vs. Germany and Sweden vs. Mexico.

ESPN pointed out that the atmosphere was much more positive this time than four years ago after World Cup 2014, where the Koreans scored just one point, in a match with Russian Federation. South Korean media on Thursday hailed the win over the world's top-ranked side as the "Miracle of Kazan".

Hundreds of Mexican soccer fans partied outside the South Korean Embassy in Mexico City on Wednesday to thank the Asian country for its victory over Germany that guaranteed the national team a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Asked about Kim's strike, which was allowed after Toni Kroos was adjudged to have played the ball backwards, Low said: "The player was in an offside position - that's what I saw".

Juan Carlos Osorio's side have had an unpredictable and entertaining World Cup so far.

But it's that stumble which will give Mexico hope, and a couple of flaws which Lozano, Javier Hernandez, and Carlos Vela could take advantage of may emerge. More broadly, of the top five countries according to Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, only Belgium and Brazil are still in the tournament.

The introduction of Filipe Luis at left back in place of the injured Marcelo hasn't weakened Brazil, and if anything it's solidified their defence.

Tottenham star Son Heung-Min, who scored the second goal against Germany, apologised to supporters for their performance.

And while he benefitted from a good night's sleep against Serbia, there hasn't been much rest for the former Sao Paulo man who played through the club season's final match this term. "That's how we're going to take it".

This game, then, won't be about what can be learnt from Brazil, it will be about what Mexico have to teach.

More than 90 minutes into the game it was 0-0.
