Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested Tuesday by anti-graft investigators and will be charged over his alleged role in the multibillion-dollar looting of a state investment fund, officials said.

Earlier, a security source said that agents from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission arrested Mr Najib.

A source from the MACC told The Straits Times that Mr Najib could face up to five charges under corruption laws and the Penal Code.

Acording to the Malaysian Insight, former Prime Minister Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak has just been reportedly arrested at his private residence in Taman Duta.

Najib has previously denied all wrongdoing.

Last month, Mahathir said authorities were seeking to bring embezzlement and bribery charges against Najib after an inquiry into the suspected theft of billions of dollars from 1MDB.

A statement by the 1MDB Task Force says Najib will be formally charged in court on Wednesday morning.

Najib, 64, suffered a shock loss at the general election in May, the first change of government since Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957.

Najib's stepson only leaves MACC office at 10.30pm.

Three years ago to the day, the Wall Street Journal reported that Malaysian investigators traced almost $700 million of 1MDB money into Najib's personal bank account.

Hamidi, Najib's former deputy, said: "I respect the rule of law".

He said this after being questioned himself at the MACC headquarters on Tuesday over separate allegations of graft against him.

MACC has been able to track the money trail from SRC more easily because transactions were made through Malaysian entities, whereas most other transfers of 1MDB funds went through foreign banks and companies.

In addition, the police have seized cash, handbags and jewellery valued at more than 1 billion ringgit as part of the investigation.

The accounts of several companies were also frozen as part of the investigation, the taskforce said.
