Google to challenge home consoles with Yeti project

Google might launch gaming hardware to accompany 'Yeti' streaming service

According to a breaking report by Kotaku that cites five individuals familiar with the matter, Google has been secretly building a platform that contains "1) Some sort of streaming platform, 2) some sort of hardware, and 3) an attempt to bring game developers under the Google umbrella, whether through aggressive recruiting or even major acquisitions".

The game studios, combined with the streaming service, could be the two core building blocks of Google's gaming hardware.

Kotaku today reiterates that the project involves a streaming platform to offer games from the cloud without presumably having to download large files in the tens of gigabytes, as well as hardware. Google is looking to buy some studios as well, a move that might be necessary to develop some sort of game experiences that would be available only on Google's gaming service. There have been whispers about the project, codenamed Yeti, since February of this year when The Information reported it.

Google was the company behind the birth of software developer Niantic, before it went independent, and we all know how well its Pokémon Go title did. According to his Wikipedia page, Mr Harrison has also spent time on the advisory board for cloud gaming Gaikai which morphed into their remote gaming services PlayStation Now and Remote Play. Numerous rumors we've heard need to be presented with some skepticism until we actually see them in action. Apparently a games streaming service is top of the agenda. "Instead of opening up your laptop or checking your phone for a guide, you could press a button to activate an overlay on your screen that cues up a YouTube walkthrough of the game you're playing", Kotaku explains.

"Creating a new service to sell games, creating new games or working with existing games companies would give Google, Netflix and Snapchat increased audience appeal, more features and services, and help them make more money". Google would be able to stream games from their servers, allowing them to do all the heavy work (graphics processing for example). One of the reasons NVIDIA's Shield works so well for gaming is that it has a dedicated library of games optimized for the platform, and it remains to be seen if Google will take a similar approach.

Google's recent hires also lend credence to suggestions it is up to something in the gaming world, with PlayStation and Xbox veteran Phil Harrison joining the company within the a year ago, alongside a number of other leaders in the gaming world.
