[H]ardOCP: Wanted: Hundreds of Entrepreneurs to Start Businesses Delivering Amazon Packages

Amazon is also offering qualifying military veterans $10,000 in reimbursements to get their own delivery business started.

Amazon is launching this service because they're basically reaching a delivery tipping point.

Starting Thursday, you can apply to start your very own small business, delivering Amazon Prime packages in Amazon branded vans and uniforms.

Dubbed "Delivery Service Partners", the program allows companies to run their own parcel delivery fleet with up to 40 vehicles and 100 employees and is geared specifically for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), per Business Insider. Taking more control over that growth, the web retailer offered to help anyone who wants to start their own delivery businesses.

The new program is slated to increase competition for existing delivery firms such as FedEx and UPS.

Amazon has been doing some major things lately, like extending Prime membership benefits to their Whole Foods locations and launching a new service that allows delivery people access the inside of your vehicle to drop off packages.

Amazon already works with hundreds of third-party courier companies that hire and manage their own fleets of drivers, but they did not disclose to Business Insider's whether its relationship with its current delivery service providers would change.

The announcement follows public criticism of Amazon by President Donald Trump over the company's arrangement with the US Postal Service. An Amazon representative declined to give details on how much it will pay for the deliveries. Amazon has set aside $1 million for this program. The company said it will help keep start-up costs to about $10,000 by offering discounts on vehicles, fuel and insurance coverage.

"We have great partners in our traditional carriers and it's exciting to continue to see the logistics industry grow", said Dave Clark, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide operations.

Others, though, likened Amazon's ambitions to a franchise business model, in which a company like McDonald's might handle branding and marketing, but leave day-to-day operations up to local owners.

Right now, when parcels are delivered late or not at all, or when they are left out in the rain or otherwise damaged, Amazon can blame the delivery companies.

Moreover, he doesn't think Amazon's new models are a direct threat to the UPS and FedEx networks. The entrepreneur will be responsible for hiring delivery people, and Amazon would be the customer, paying the business to pick up packages from its 75 delivery centers around the country and delivering them to shopper's doorsteps.
