People loot shops in Delmas, a commune near Port-au-Prince, during protests against the rising price of fuel, on July 8, 2018.

Amid violent protests in Port au Prince, the U.S. Embassy in Haiti issued an emergency notification on Sunday informing U.S. citizens they should "shelter in place", and warning them against traveling to the airport.

Moise had urged demonstrators late Saturday to "go home", saying the price hike suspension had "corrected what had to be corrected". Supermarkets have also come under attack from the mobs of protesters.

On Friday, at least three people were reportedly killed as Haitians took to the streets, burning tires and mounting roadblocks following the government announcement of the increase.

120 United States citizens are trapped along with 100 natives at the Oasis Hotel which protesters tried to set fire to earlier on Saturday.

Some aggressive young men carried knives, and special police crowd control units fired their guns into the air and detonated tear gas.

"U.S. Embassy personnel", the statement continued, "are still under a shelter-in-place order" and the "embassy will continue to monitor the situation" on the ground in Haiti.

Asked how she felt about the violent protests and looting, Gislaine Jeudy of Marigot, which is a few kilometers from Jacmel, said it was discouraging and unnecessary.

"When you think about the fact that some Haitians make just $5 a week and the government wants to increase the price of gasoline by 38% that in and of itself points to the reason for the unrest", he said.

"We're seeing a little bit more calm right now", an American, Stacy Librandi Bourne, told CNN from Port-au-Prince where, the news network said, she was among 50 American tourists, children and missionaries unable to leave the Oasis Hotel because of the unrest.

Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant, after the riots, announced the temporary suspension of double-digit government hikes to prices for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene on Saturday afternoon. The proposed price increases followed an agreement with the International Monetary Fund to stop subsidizing energy prices so more of the budget could be put toward social services and improved infrastructure.

In response, many Haitians rioted.

Nearly 40,000 people continue to live in makeshift camps in Haiti, following an quake that struck the country eight years ago, killing more than 200,000 people.
