Here's the First Confirmed Image of a Planet Being Born

Despite the fact that it can take ages for a planet to fully form, actually capturing the process of planet formation has proven to be incredibly hard. The young planet is carving a path through the primordial disc of gas and dust around the very young star PDS 70.

"Using a technique called angular differential imaging, which takes advantage of the Earth's rotation around its own axis during the time of observation, we were able to subtract the bright light from the star to make the comparably faint planet visible", Keppler explained. But in a recent feat, scientists used an instrument called Sphere to capture it at last - a great win after they had started looking for a possible baby planet in 2012.

Known as PDS 70b, it appears to be several times the size of Jupiter and probably has a cloudy atmosphere.

PDS 70b is much hotter than any planet in our solar system, registering a sizzling 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (1,000 degrees Celsius), the researchers determined.

The new image suggests the newborn planet has created sizable gaps in the protoplanetary disk.

"The problem is that until now, most of these planet candidates could just have been features in the disc". Two sets of researchers, published in two different papers in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics on Monday, detailed how a planet is formed. Without the mask, the light from planet would be overhwhelmed by PDS 70. This elevated temperature may seem odd given the planet's significant distance from its star, but it's in line with that of other newborn gas giants, study team members said.

"We needed to observe a planet in a young star's disc to really understand the processes behind planet formation", Müller added in the statement.

"Keppler's results give us a new window onto the comple and poorly-understood early stages of planetary evolution", said André Müller, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and leader of the second team to investigate the new planet. This is the first time they've actually been able to detect a separate baby planet.

The image is the first confirmed direct observation of such a young exoplanet, discovery team members said.
