The ANP was the main target of Taliban attacks in the 2013 election campaign, during which a senior party leader, Bashir Bilour, was killed in a suicide bombing.

Haroon was son of Bashir Ahmed Bilour, a senior ANP figure who was himself martyred in a suicide blast in Peshawar in 2012.

Mohammad Khurasani, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, said in a statement that they targeted ANP's rally, killing Bilour, a candidate for a seat in the provincial legislature in Peshawar.

The blast occurred as Bilour arrived at the stage to address supporters in Yaka Toot area.

The Awami National Party governed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province from 2008 to 2013.

Reacting to the incident, Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk, Senate Standing Committee on Interior Chairman Rehman Malik, Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, as well as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, condemned the attack and death of the ANP leader.

Peshawar city is considered a gateway to Pakistan's troubled semi-autonomous tribal regions, where many militant groups - including Al-Qaeda - operated until the government launched operations to oust them.

An AFP reporter saw human remains, shoes, broken chairs, and caps littered at the scene. Bilour was set to contest the July 25 elections from the Peshawar's PK-78 constituency.

"I lost consciousness after the blast".

The army announced on Tuesday it would deploy over 371,000 troops to ensure peaceful and fair and free elections on July 25.

His body was later taken to Bilour House where party workers paid tributes to him.

But ANP leaders have vowed to continue their campaign this year despite the bombing in Peshawar.

The Pakistani Taliban said the attack on Tuesday night was an act of revenge for the ANP's rule. These groups have often targeted political parties and leaders who oppose their views.

According to a tweet by Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, Army Chief shared grief of Bilour family and ANP on condemnable targeting of Haroon Bilour & victims of heinous terrorist attack. Officials have said that while the threat remains, terrorists have been significantly weakened because of military operations in recent years.
