Humble Mexico plans to attack 'best team in world' Brazil

Thiago Silva celebrates with Neymar after scoring during the match

He said he had fond memories of that tournament but was now dreaming of winning the World Cup.

Brazil's Neymar celebrates at the end of the round of 16 match between Brazil and Mexico at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Samara Arena on Monday.

Yet he answered a number of questions with his display and a decisive finish early in the second half from a move that he had started himself.

The 20-year-old did well in the opening stages when Mexico were the better team. The team opened with a win over Germany, setting the defending champions on the path to an early exit.

Brazil coach Tite was unsurprisingly supportive of Neymar, dismissing accusations of playacting, while preferring to talk about his improving side, who seem to be finding their rhythm after a third successive 2-0 victory.

Although Neymar has scored only two goals in four games in Russian Federation, he did enter the World Cup after spending three months recovering from a broken right foot.

Brazil will now meet the winners of Monday's later match between Belgium and Japan, but after seeing Argentina, Spain and Portugal eliminated in the last 16, Tite's men will fancy their chances.

Brazil's forward Neymar eyes the ball during the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup round of 16 football match between Brazil and Mexico at the Samara Arena in Samara on July 2, 2018. "I just have to play, help my teammates, help my team".

While Layun didn't receive a caution for his action, he clearly stepped on Neymar and enabled a stoppage that halted some of Mexico's momentum.

Despite his praise for Mexico, Neymar was put out by a stamp suffered at the feet of Miguel Layun.

You could argue that his goal was fortunate, but an important part of a forward's game is their positioning, and Firmino was in the right place at the right time as Neymar's effort was saved.

The margin became more comfortable with two minutes left when Firmino - just on as a replacement for Coutinho - added the finishing touch after Neymar had led a counter-attack.

"If we want to be able to dream about winning the World Cup we have to be able to beat any opponent", said the Porto player. "We know we have players that can decide the game".

Brazil had to wait until the 88th minute to put the match to bed when Neymar was the architect, crossing for Firmino to tap the ball home. "It's obvious", Layun said.

Neymar had a rather strong reaction to it, some of which could have been motivated by the interest of drawing attention to the incident.

"Each and every one of their players can control the ball and pass the ball very well".
